Derek Bell on the High Banking at Daytona International Speedway
This Friday, January 25, 2019, L.A. Honda World Racing will takeoff from the starting line for the first stint in the 2019 Michelin Pilot Challenge with IMSA.
The first race is an endurance challenge at Daytona International Speedway. Endurance challenges are four hours long and test the cohesion and stability of a team in addition to their performance.
One of the factors that makes following race seasons so interesting is that each race is done on a different track, and each track possesses it’s own personality and challenges.
Daytona International Speedway is largely famous for the high banking. The natural inclination of a driver is to slow down after coming off of a straight-a-way and hitting a curvature (turn) in the track. At Daytona, however, this natural instinct could cost you the race. The high banking in Daytona is designed in a way in which you must utilize gravity and the gas pedal (acceleration) on the vehicle to keep traction and speed throughout the whole of the turn!
